One fine day by instead of sending an image a shortcut of the image was sent through skype. I downloaded even with warning message. Suddenly all my desktop and programs shortcuts changed with new file extension .lnk. Follow below steps if you encountered the same issue.

Go to Start > Run > type "regedit" and press the Enter key
Navigate to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\FileExts\.lnk\
Delete user choice folder, close registry editor and restart your machine.
Navigate to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\FileExts\.lnk\
