SQL Server: Function to remove specified characters in a string

I needed a function to remove specified characters from a string. This simple function could perform my task.

ALTER FUNCTION [dbo].[fn_StripCharacters]

@MatchExpression VARCHAR(255)
)
RETURNS NVARCHAR(MAX)
AS
BEGIN
SET @MatchExpression = '%['+@MatchExpression+']%'

WHILE PatIndex(@MatchExpression, @String) > 0
SET @String = Stuff(@String, PatIndex(@MatchExpression, @String), 1, '')

RETURN @String
